Not having a strut in hand, and wanting to get an idea here, is the top of the strut where the shaft moves up and down welded in place or will it unscrew. Other cars I've worked on in the past had tops that would unscrew. The pictures in the manual "look" like that might be the case but just asking those who've been there.

Thanks, Don

That cap is not unscrewable..I'm looking at the ft. strut. Pressed on with a few spot welds. Search Koni inserts and you'll see where they need to be sawed off to gain access.

***UPDATE**

I took a 24" pipe wrench to the top of my old ft. strut and, turning CCW, was able to "loosen" about 1/16" before I stopped. It's definitely making the gold cap lift but don't know if it is threaded ( I doubt) or just working it's way up. I didn't go further since I wasn't going to discover if it would suddenly "pop" spraying oil all over the ceiling of the garage..still have the stains from a previous mishap with a rear strut.

Wouldn't "screw" back in...bang the cap back to original position with 3 lb hammer. Would need to pinch cap back at the side slots to ensure any kind of intergrity if I were to reinstall.

Koni instruction told me to grind around the top and pull out the guts - about 5 min on each using a grinder......

Sorry but posted it in another group, but here is what I have just completed - enjoy.
