I may purchase a 1994 Subaru SVX with about 150,000 miles from a private seller. I'm somewhat familiar with these cars and some of the mentioned problems (transmission, wheel bearings) and plan to have a mechanic (possibly a Subaru dealer) give it a once over before going ahead with the purchase.
Any tips on what I should direct the technician to look for? (This is not an AWD version, doesn't have ABS brakes). The seller has indicated that it needs a "front lower left ball joint" now and may need the following down the road: rear struts and
springs, rear sway bar bushings, and front sway bar links.
Any thoughts on these repairs? Any idea on how much these repairs will run? Should I really wait on this stuff (besides the lower left ball joint)?
Thank you in advance for the advice.

Well does the car bounce up and down over bumps or does the rear of the car sag a lot. The struts from Subaru are 15+ years old and are going to fail soon after getting them installed. If the rear just sags then I'd replace the springs with ones from an AWD version as they are stiffer than the FWD ones.

I haven't inspected the car yet -- but can't I get new struts and springs? If I can locate the parts, wouldn't it be better to do that?

Price of the parts is the big problem for the most part.
Check out the ride like redlightning suggested and when driving listen for humming sounds coming from the rear(rear wheel bearings), check all switches and electrical to make sure everything works, feel for pulsation in the brake pedal, check all the fluids, and run a carfax on it.
Welcome to the forums and good luck.
