Well, I bit the bullet. Yesterday I spent $7900 and purchased this:

One of only 300 imported to the united states, they imported a lot more between 1996-1997 but those were all sedans, which frankly, look a bit ungainly compared to the avant. 1995 Audi S6 Avant, Emerald Green with Ecru leather interior. 20v Turbocharged 2.2 liter inline 5 cylinder, making 230hp with about 245 ft lbs of torque. Car has 101k miles, with fresh timing belt, rear calipers, e brake cables, valve cover gasket, and plug wires. Runs and drives like a new car, very tight, and the whole car is built like a bank vault.
Incidentally, I hated Audi until a few weeks ago when I drove an A6 of this generation. The thing just exudes a feeling of rigidity, and it is unmatched by newer generations. When Lexus, Acura, and Infinfiti started putting on the heat in mid 90s, german car makers started to cut corners and rush things into production, resulting in catastrophic reliability records of cars like the Audi A4 1.8T, and B5 A6. This generation, the C4, is based on the Audi 100, which was originally introduced in 1991. The engine is a cast iron block and is supposedly reliable for 200k easy, and everything seems very "over engineered" in old school german style.
Quattro AWD is standard, and automatic transmissions were not even offered for this generation of S car. 5 spd manual ONLY. I drove it about 400 miles today, from Minneapolis back to Milwaukee, and it is a dream. I adore this car, and I'm sure I will fall for it even harder as time goes on. Current plans are to get some HIDs for it as soon as possible, but then just leave it stock for a while. Down the road a MTM chip and stainless exhaust will bump up the power to about 300hp, and I can't decide if I want to remove the S badging and make it a sleeper, or drop it in the weeds and pick up some dope luxury rims.

Not a bad find Rob, not bad at all.

Oh very clean! I vote to...Drop it!! And with it being a turbo...you will never run out of mods to do. German cars are dope, but you will never run out of repairs either. It's sooo worth it, they drive like nothing else, I'm jealous.

Like I said.... this car is supposed to be extremely reliable. Unlike other, newer Audis. Supposed to be kinda like old school benz reliability. Only time will tell.

Update: Since owning it, the gas pedal cover broke off, a relay died for my windows, and that's it. The relay was $450 at the dealer, so I went to a junkyard and got one for nothing.
Slightly longer term thoughts: The SVX is a FAR better high speed long distance car for TWO people. The Audi cruises comfortably at 80, but does not feel nearly as solid and secure the SVX. Another factor that I had never considered was crosswinds. This is a fairly tall car, and in wagon form, that is a lot of surface area from the side. On the freeway, on a windy day, I'm constantly correcting the steering while driving. I've NEVER had to do that on my SVX. Ever.
Performance wise, the S6 beats out the SVX in most cases, especially from 25-80mph. From a standing start, I think a properly setup SVX would take the S6 off the line, purely because of turbo lag. On the upper end... I'm not really sure. The S6 has about the same HP, but with 20 more ft lbs of torque. The big advantage is that is has a manual transmission, so that's less drivetrain loss, and more gears to choose from. Due to the Audi's brick like aerodynamics, I would expect the SVX be able to over take one, but not until above 110-120mph. After that, I'm pretty sure the SVX could edge a win.
MPG wise, they're very comparable. I've been getting a steady 19-22mpg in the S6, and in my SVX I was getting about the same. Total toss up.
Interior: Audi wins. Easy. That's what they're known for. The HVAC system is a lot more confusing though.... the brilliance of the SVX HVAC controls is unmatched.
Parking: The S6 is huge. I suck at parking it. The SVX is easy to park in comparison.
Overall, despite being two vastly different cars, they are similar in a lot of ways. At this point in my life, having something with a lot of room and the ability to tow something was extremely important.... and I HATE automatics. But if I didn't have a boat, and I wasn't about to move somewhere, a manual transmissioned SVX would be extremely tempting.

Audi looks nice. Those seats look pretty cozy. I miss having leather seats. My daily driver (firebird) has a crappy all plastic interior with cloth seats. The Firebird has absolutely no creature comforts or cool gadgets like the SVX had.

Uh, yeah, it's one of them there super nice GM products. I bet you have that turn signal stalk that they used since 1979 too, eh?
GM pulls out some neat things every one in a while (cobalt SS, CTSV, Corvette), but most of the time I want them to die in a fire. Speaking of which, check this out:

Very nice, Rob! As stated above, there are plenty of options if you ever decide to modify it. There are suspension options that will help with the crosswind stability (everything but the surface area, that is)
